FLASH: Diabetes Meter & Test Strips FAQ

What’s changing?

Starting October 1, 2013, we will ONLY cover diabetic meters and test strips by Abbott Diabetes Care. We will no longer cover other brands after that date. Abbott offers these preferred test strips:

  • Freestyle Lite
  • Freestyle InsuLinx
  • Precision Xtra

When will members be notified of the change?

Members will begin receiving letters about the change on July 15, along with information on how to obtain a free Abbott Diabetes Care meter.

Who’s affected by this change?

All non-Medicare members with pharmacy benefits (for example, State of Illinois members, those insured through their employer and individual plan members) will be affected October 1. Medicare Advantage members will be affected January 1, 2014.

What do I need to do?

If you do not currently use Abbott products, ask your doctor for a new prescription for Abbott Diabetes Care supplies.

What happens if I decide to fill a non-Abbott brand of test strips?

If you fill a prescription for strips not covered by us, you will pay the full cost of the strips. Your copayments won’t apply.

Does my doctor need to write a new prescription?

If you’re changing to Abbott diabetic testing supplies from a different brand, your doctor will need to write a new prescription.

Will this cost me anything?

No, there will be no additional cost to you. You should receive a coupon for a free Freestyle meter on or after July 15. The copayment on Abbott test strips will be the same or less than it was previously.

How do I get an Abbott meter if I don’t already have one?

If you don’t use Abbott products already or don’t receive a coupon, you can:

  1. Call Abbott directly at 1-866-224-8892 (Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST) to get a free meter shipped within two days
  2. You can place an online order at ChooseFreeStyle.com
  3. Your physician may also have them available in their office

Will this add any additional cost to my plan as a whole (i.e., premiums)?

No, there will be no additional costs to your plan.

What do I do if my physician wants me to stay on a non-Abbott product?

They will need to explain why none of the Abbott products meet your needs and why the requested brand of test strips is medically necessary. This should be faxed or mailed to the our Pharmacy department for review by a clinical pharmacist.

If you have questions or need help, contact us at 1-800-851-3379, option 4.

How do I use my new meter?

Abbott Diabetes Care offers training and support to help you get started with your new meter. The support center can be reached by calling 1-800-522-5226 and is available 24 hours a day, 7 a week. This training is available in English and Spanish, as well as other languages.

Can I use Abbott products with my insulin pump?

Yes, although Abbott products will not electronically communicate with insulin pumps, you can manually enter your blood sugar readings into the pump.
